Cave Babies

Our topic this term is ‘Cave Babies’. To introduce the pupils to the topic we planned a sparkle day on the first day back to school after the Christmas holidays. We created a letter addressed to the class from the Gruffalo as our hook asking the pupils to work together in small groups to build a new cave for him using recyclable materials. The pupils really enjoyed this challenge and had lots of fun working together making their caves. Click on the Gruffalo to hear the story.

We have carried out lots of exciting activities this term so far which include:

• Learning all about different types of houses
• Looking at the similarities and differences between different types of houses
• We went for a walk around Troedyrhiw to find different houses, recorded our results in a tally chart and then displayed our findings in a bar chart which we created using the Just2easy software on Hwb
• We have looked in detail at our families, learnt how our families are similar and different to each other and created family trees
• We have also created timelines to show how humans grow and develop throughout their lives

Throughout the topic we have used lots of reading books such as the Gruffalo and Cave Baby to support teaching and learning. Click the book to hear the story.

The pupils have completed some lovely work retelling the story the Gruffalo using Pie Corbett’s Talk4Writing key connectives during their Literacy lessons.

We have a school trip planned at the beginning of April for the pupils. We will be taking them on a visit to the Gruffalo trail.

Towards the end of the term we have also planned a celebration day at school where the pupils can dress up as one of their favourite characters from one of the books we have studied as part of the topic and we have planned an outdoor picnic and a cave themed party with games to celebrate all of the pupil’s hard work and achievements throughout the term.
